Roger Richert was possibly the happiest man in Wayne County today as we discussed the important news of the $500,000 windfall okayed by the Redevelopment Commission.   Money, he shared, which was quite possibly earmarked for this project as far back as 1985, according to Mayor Sally Hutton.

At the end of a long day talking with the architect, who was hired locally, and other followup meetings, Roger was nearly giddy with excitement–but not just for himself and his own dream.

“It is unbelievable the overwhelming support of this community,”  says Richert.

He added he has been “humbled” by this outpouring of support, and firmly believes that this achievement belongs to the whole community.

The news yesterday was unexpected though long awaited as the project of rebuilding the Depot has been a dream for many in this community.  It’s realization will also mean job creation and economic stimulus for the town of Richmond and Wayne County.

When asked when the project will start Roger said that within about two weeks of writing the check development will begin.  He explained there will be three phases to the project the first being the interior–gutting and replacing floors.  Second phase will be the exterior terra cotta and mortar. And the third phase will be the replacement of windows.  A different contractor will work on each phase.  And that is just the beginning.  After these phases there will still be much work to do.  Stairs will need to be built along with the addition of plumbing and electricity.  This is truly a monumental project.

With all this work ahead, Roger could only express his happiness at this long awaited dream in our community.  A dream turned reality which will positively affect many in Wayne County.  It is easy to see why the consensus at the meeting last night was that with Roger Richert involved this project it will finally see it’s long awaited completion.
