When Linda Sarsour walked on to the stage at Earlham College last Wednesday, she began by telling the audience how speechless she was. She told us that she never expected such a warm welcome in Indiana.
As a proud Hoosier, this is an issue for me. My home state has always been a place of kindness, where people open doors for each other and wave to their neighbors. Why should she not feel the same way that I do?
With this in mind, the key message that I took from Linda’s speech was to know those neighbors, no matter their color, shape or creed. Because if we don’t know them, we can’t love them. If we can’t love them, how can we come together and really feel patriotic?
Patriotism isn’t about you or I, Republican or Democrat, it’s about all of us together. So head next door and say “Hello.”
Let’s show the world our best side, Hoosiers.
