Starr-Gennett Foundation and Richmond Parks and Recreation will co-host the first ever Starr-Gennett Kids’ Day on Friday, July 15. The goal of Kids’ Day is to instill community pride through active learning. Local youth will be treated to a free day of music and arts experiences while learning about their hometown’s unique musical history. The FREE event will take place from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Starr Pavilion, 201 South 1st Street, and is open to all children entering grades K-6.
Youth will take part in an interactive concert, creating their own song to be performed on stage at the Gennett Walk of Fame Music Festival on September 10. They will also “tour” the Walk of Fame and Gennett Records, and have the opportunity to work on Richmond Pride contests or try out for the New Voices in the Gorge choral group.
The Starr-Gennett Foundation is also pleased to announce that Kids Day will help launch the new Starr-Gennett curriculum that fulfills Indiana history standards for 1st and 2nd grades. The Chamber of Commerce will help unveil a traveling educational display at 2:30 p.m., created by Indiana University art student Angie Appleberry and funded by Wayne County Foundation. Mayor Sally Hutton is “excited by this event” and will proclaim July 15 “Starr-Gennett Kids’ Day.” Elizabeth Starr Academy is serving as the pilot for the educational program in 2011-12, with plans to expand to all regional elementary schools in the following year.
This FREE day of community and cultural enrichment is made possible through the grant support of Wayne County Foundation, Richmond Parks and Recreation, Indiana Arts Commission, and Whitewater Valley REMC.
