The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the first running of the 500-mile race in 1911. The IMS developed a contest for communities to show their spirit for this celebration. Communities, cities and towns in Indiana were given the opportunity to enter the “Back Home Again In Indiana” decorating contest. Twenty-six communities entered and ten finalists were announced last week. The winner will be given $25,000 for their community.

Hagerstown, Indiana was one of the top ten communities selected. Their entry into the contest can be found on a new website, www.indy500hagerstown.com.

The judging criteria will be based on the internet media and the town’s decoration for the 500-mile race. Both celebrity judges and the public will determine the winner.

Anyone can vote for the town to win. Each day a vote can be placed on the Back Home Again in Indiana website of the Indiana Motor Speedway. One vote per day from each email will be accepted. Voting ends on May 25 when the winner is announced.

Hagerstown was represented at the first race in 1911 by members of the Teetor family, owners of the Light Inspection Car Co. By 1926, after having changed its name a few times, became Perfect Circle Corporation. The Hagertown band, sponsored by the Light Inspection Car Co. played at the first race and for many years after. Perfect Circle sponsored cars in 1927 but had no winner. That was the last of the car sponsorships for them but began providing race drivers with Perfect Circle piston rings. Many winners through the years have used PC rings and other products in their cars.

Many people have connections to Perfect Circle, Hagerstown and Central Indiana. Hagerstown’s interest and participation with the Indy 500 will surprise and entertain as you read the history and timeline and look at the pictures on the website. The people of Hagerstown ask that you support their entry into the contest by voting for them as often as you can.
