According to Bill Henry, a coordinator for the staging of the escort in Richmond, if tonight is any indication “there will be an incredible turn out tomorrow.”
Already, he shared, hotels are filled with about five rooms left, and the shuttles that are taking riders to the several Veterans organizations are “packed” each time.
Henry added that they have been setting up all day today and have the concession stands up, canopies out and all is ready for tomorrow.

As he talked a “whoop” was heard in the background from one of the riders excited about tomorrow. Bill Henry said that they “never thought they would get this kind of response,” and are still anticipating at least 6,000 to 7,000 riders. He added it was hard to estimate and there could be a lot more. They are counting down until tomorrow and Bill added he didn’t expect to get much sleep tonight.
Many organizations and people have helped to organize this major event, according to Henry, including: The Marine Corps League, Whitewater Valley Motorcycling, the VFW, ABATE- the American Bikers group, and the local Hog group. Henry also added that two police officers- Lt Benedict and Sgt Leverton have been especially helpful with traffic issues and logistics.

In addition, Bill had much praise for the support from the City of Richmond. “Anything we wanted they let us do.” He added that the community has also rallied and everybody has been great.
With the sounds of excitement in the background, Bill’s voice showed his own excitement and emotion when he added that “it will be so humbling when the beams come to town tomorrow.”

For residents in Wayne County who want to witness this event Mr. Henry had some advice. He said the best bet will be to line 40 and N. A. St. to see the beams arrive—the closer they get to the city building the more congested it will be- so the best view will be from those two spots. He also suggested getting uptown early if you want to find a place to park. Again, several Veterans organizations will be serving breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. (or as Henry said until they run out of food). The parking garage will also have a shuttle for those who need it.
Finally Bill Henry shared that it is “so hard to put into words how this will impact our town and our State.”
Safe travels to all who are riding in the escort and much appreciation for your time with us in Wayne County.
