Are you looking for some warm indoor activities to do while the temperatures are hanging around the subzeros? Wayne County has lots of fun outings to offer you to get you out of the house! Here are just a few…
Wayne County Historical Museum
Besides having a real mummy on display, the WCHM also offers many collections throughout the museum. From cars and buggies of olden days to inventions by local people throughout history, people young and old can enjoy the museum and what it offers. Located in Richmond IN, the museum has been around since 1930 and according to their website the museum is “comprised of eight buildings on a compact site, the museum is a unique repository of Wayne County and Richmond history from early pioneer life through the industrial revolution into modern times.” Hours: Monday – Friday 9-4 p.m. & Saturday 1-4 p.m. Minimal entrance fee.
Hayes Arboretum
Though we generally think of the arboretum as a place to “get outdoors,” it also offers some unique indoor experiences as well. The bird viewing room is a favorite among locals, and even in winter you can spot a blue jay or red bird from the comfort of a warm rocking chair.
They also offer “An 1833 dairy barn that acts as our Nature Center, filled with exhibits on regional flora and fauna. There’s also the Hayes Museum, where you can learn about the Arboretum’s rich history.” Hours: Tuesday – Saturday 9-5 p.m. Free.
Fountain Acres
Take a little drive in the country to a nearby Amish market in Fountain City for a unique shopping experience. If you enjoy samples of cheeses, and other delicious homemade foods, you will love this little Amish store. Shelves of spices, candies, dried goods, baked goods and hard to find gluten free products line the aisles of this country store. A nice little day trip. But be sure to get there early because they close promptly. These are very busy people! Hours: M-Friday 8-6 p.m. & Saturday 8-4 p.m.
Model T Museum
Located in the historic Depot District in Richmond IN, the Model T Museum is a favorite of historians and car enthusiasts from all over the country. Every year, hundreds descend on the area and celebrate their love of all things Model T, many bringing their own cars to display and drive on a day trip. You can see some of the cars in the museum year round and they also have a Model T gift shop.
“Member families of the Model T Ford Club of America enjoy free admission to the museum and the museum library. Non-members pay $3 per adult. Children 12 and under pay no admission.”
Hours – Tuesday through Sunday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and on Mondays by appointment. The Museum closes at 4:00pm during the winter months of January, February, and March.. Museum Phone: 765-373-3106; Fax 765-488-0014
Abbotts Candy
Located in Wayne County in the little town of “happy people”- Hagerstown IN, this candy store is a functioning candy factory where you can watch chocolates being dipped and caramels being cut for wrapping. You can’t get more “local” than that. A fun excursion for all ages. You can call ahead for group tours to be sure they will be able to show you how they do what they do in their little factory of deliciousness. Or stop by anytime they are open – they are sure to be creating something! Smells are free!
Hours: Monday – Friday 9-4 p.m.
