RICHMOND, Ind. — Gary DeCoker, director of Earlham’s Japan Study program, reports that the program’s resident director in Tokyo has been in touch with all of the Earlham students on the Japan Study program and all are safe after the 8.9 magnitude earthquake. Most students now are on the Cultural Practicum portion of the program and are outside of Tokyo. “Fortunately,” reports DeCoker, “most of the students are in southern Japan, away from the epicenter of the earthquake.” Students will stay in those locations and continue with their programs. Cell phone communication in Tokyo and points north has been severely disrupted. E-mail and land line phones in some areas remain open.
Earlham also hosts students from Waseda University each year. According to an e-mail from Junho Song of the Center for International Education of Waseda University, the university “has not reported of any loss or injuries of their students, faculties and staffs at this point.
