Saturday was the first of the new flea markets which will take place the second Saturday of each month at the Depot District underpass. With nearly 100 estimated people attending, it was considered a success by the vendors and coordinator Laurel Whitt.
Laurel is the founder of a the non-profit “Tossed & Found” which will benefit those with financial need going back to school by helping them with their utility bills and access to the internet for classes. When asked how hard it was to coordinate this monthly venture, Laurel said, “it was easy to get approved by the city Board of Works, they “loved the idea,” and are in full support of it’s mission.

In addition to being a fund raising opportunity for her non-profit, Laurel explained that this will be a way for others in the community to make money for their non-profits, or those who are unemployed who need a place to sell their things and make a little income. It’s also a good alternative to having a yard sale at your own home.

Janet Bujtor, from Richmond, said they she and her daughter “did really well and met a lot of nice people.” They were at the Depot at 6:00 a.m. to set up. She and another vendor agreed that it was a beautiful setting under the overpass, no direct sun and a nice breeze kept it cool for them.
Another non-profit WIT, Women in Transition, set up a table and according to Laurel they did quite well. They had great items to sell and plan to be back next month. Vendors had a great variety of items to choose from including clothing, toys and games, Vera Bradley bags, hand made bags, jewelry, and flea market things. There were nine vendors signed up to participate with the first flea market and many more are expected for next month.
To learn more about how to participate call Laurel Whitt at Tossed & Found : 765-966-1857. Spaces are available for 10.00 each and all money from spaces will go to support Tossed & Found. (Vendors will keep all the proceeds from their own sales). Flea Market hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. the second Saturday of the month.
