A project that has been long anticipated by veterans and others in the community, the Avenue of Flags will start going up this Monday, June 28th and stay up until Veteran’s Day, November 11th.
According to Roger Richert a staunch supporter of this project, the response has been tremendous. He shared that the idea came from a town in York Nebraska, population 17,500 who created this same type of avenue on their interstate 80. Richmond will be one of only 14 communities in the US with an Avenue of Flags.
In order to make this project happen the committee had to get the approval from entities such as the Department of Transportation and the City.
You can sponsor one of the 400 flags in memory or in honor of a veteran. The cost is 50.00 per flag which is the cost of the flag and pole. The names of those honored will be compiled for display at RichmondAvenueofFlags.com.
It is appropriate for Richmond to have this kind of display, according to Roger Richert, due to their status as an “All American City.” The avenue will begin at Interstate 70 and run down US 27 into town where it will break into two branches on 40 next to courthouse and go across bridges ending up at the Veteran’s Memorial Park. The flags will be positioned high on utility poles rather than on trees as they are in Nebraska.
The view should be spectacular driving into town from Interstate 70. For more information on this project you can contact Marshall Smith, President of Wayne County Veterans Council, or Ron Weadick, Secretary/Treasurer of WCVC at 765-973-9207.

I have called 765-973-9207 twice in the last couple of weeks and left a voice mail asking someone to call me reference the flags. I would call Marshall Smith but there are three listed in the phone book and I’m not sure which one to call.
Dave, Marshall Smith is the Veterans Service Officer and his office number is 765-973-9207 Monday thru Thursday
