Richmond’s Roller Derby Team, The Dire Skates, is having open tryouts for men and women on August 21st at 4pm at the Richmond Skate. The team is recruiting both Men and Women this year! They are looking for referees and enough men and women to start a new co-ed team as well as adding to their current women’s team.
Wondering what it’s like to be a part of the Dire Skates? Well, GWC asked just that to team member, Chrissy Bahnweg (“Princess Die”):
My team mates are the most fearless women I know. We are mothers, sisters, daughters, nurses, bankers, teachers, business owners off the track. But all have a story that has made us stronger as a person; and its great to have Roller Derby as an outlet. Being on the Dire Skates team is the best support system anyone could ever have. We bond and have this wonderful sisterhood. We all have jobs on the team that make everything run more smoothly. I have been on a lot of competitive teams in my life, but this team is so organized it makes everything about it easy.
For those interested in becoming a part of this team as a member or referee, get down the The Skate on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Skate rental will be available, but you are to bring skates and pads if you have them.
