  • First Day of Historic US 40 Yard Sales…Not a Rain Out in Wayne County
June 3, 2010

By Karole Passmore

US 40 yard saleThe first day of the annual US 40 yard sale which stretches over 800 miles from Baltimore to St Louis was an overall success, mainly due to the rain holding off long enough for people set up, sell and buy.

The sales that I visited today were mostly antiques, clothes, books and décor.  Many yards that I drove by and will hit later this week had hand crafted items such as tables, chairs, bird houses etc for sale.

The most successful sales were those that set up along US 40 rather than on side streets.  Centerville had high traffic and many shoppers, with several yard sales to choose from and enjoy.

us 40 yard saleI was able to acquire some unique things for my vintage booth set up at the Railroad Store–old pictures, dishes, and collectables.  Of course my daughter had to have some toys–which at a yard sale for fifty cents to a dollar it is hard to refuse.  We also found her some play clothes for the summer and will be looking later this week for more books to add to her summer reading collection.

A diehard fan of yard sales this one is like a trip to a theme park for me–one exciting “ride” after another.

Treat yourself to some fun and give yourself plenty of time to stop and look–you never know what you may find.  And be careful out there because the traffic is congested in some places so take your time and be prepared to wait.

Most of all–Happy Hunting!

  1. So…the second day has not started off as well–but there is a glimmer of sun on the west side of Richmond–so maybe things will shape up as the day goes on…

  2. So third day–wow what a downpour…visited some sales after the rain and the people seemed a little dampened in spirits…but still selling a little. Hope tomorrow goes better for them!! (PS I found some more really cool stuff for my vintage booth.
