JUKO 2010

Parks Department Offers Summer Camp Filled with Fun Activities

Richmond Parks and Recreation will once again be hosting their free, summer day camp, Just Us Kids Outdoors (J.U.K.O.) from June 13th– July 22nd for children entering grades 1-6 in the fall. Activities include swimming twice a week at the Cordell Municipal Pool, Friday field trips, noncompetitive games, arts and crafts, and more. Each day of camp, the children receive a free lunch prepared by Richmond Community Schools through the USDA Summer Food Service Program. Children not attending camp are still able to receive a lunch at the five locations camp is offered.

Morning sessions of J.U.K.O. are held at Springwood Lake Park and Vaile Elementary School from 9am-Noon. Afternoon sessions of J.U.K.O. are held at Glen Miller Park and Mary Scott Park from 1-4pm.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays both morning and afternoon sessions meet at the Cordell Municipal Pool

Municipal Pool, Richmond

Morning campers benefit from the pool being closed to the public. “For parent’s who are concerned about their child’s swimming experience, the morning sessions are a great fit. Besides swim lesson attendees, we are the only ones at the pool,” shares camp director Blair Beach, Community Recreation Coordinator for the parks department. The program will also implement a new swimming evaluation program this year, through a kit from Church Mutual Insurance Company. Children will be evaluated on their swimming level by the lifeguards and receive color coded bracelets which designate what areas of the pool they are able to swim in.

On Fridays, the camp will attend field trips to The Skate, Hayes Arboretum and Family Fitness just to name a few. 5th and 6th grade campers also attend special field trips on Monday.

Counselors for the program are certified in CPR and First Aid, attend a one-week training camp, and pass a police background and sex offender’s check prior to camp.

J.U.K.O. is free!
